(KPL)On October 10, 2024, in Vientiane, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone chaired the 21st ASEAN-India Summit, attended by ASEAN leaders, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Timor-Leste's Prime Minister as an observer. The summit adopted two key outcome documents: the Joint Statement on Strengthening the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace, Stability, and Prosperity, and the ASEAN-India Joint Statement on Advancing Digital Transformation.
The meeting reviewed the progress of ASEAN-India cooperation and outlined plans to further enhance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, recognizing over 30 years of dialogue relations between ASEAN and India. The leaders praised India's contributions to ASEAN Community-building efforts and agreed to designate 2025 as the Year of ASEAN-India Tourism, aiming to boost people-to-people and cultural exchanges.
Discussions also highlighted the potential for deeper collaboration in trade and investment, education, human capital development, the digital economy, and support for Micro, Medium, and Small Enterprises (MSMEs).
India remains one of ASEAN's most important dialogue partners. ASEAN-India relations were established in 1995, elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2012, and further enhanced to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2022.
