(KPL) On October 10 in Vientiane, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone presided over the 4th ASEAN-Australia Summit, attended by ASEAN leaders and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, with Timor-Leste's Prime Minister participating as an observer. The summit reviewed past cooperation and discussed future efforts to strengthen ASEAN-Australia relations.
The leaders expressed appreciation for the successful Special Summit held in March 2024 in Melbourne, which marked the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Australia dialogue relations. The event, co-chaired by Prime Minister Sonexay as ASEAN Chair and the Prime Minister of Australia, highlighted key milestones in the relationship.
Looking ahead, the summit called for intensified collaboration, particularly through the implementation of initiatives introduced at the Special Summit, including the Plan of Action (2025-2029), aimed at realizing the ASEAN-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Australia has been a longstanding and key dialogue partner of ASEAN since the establishment of their relations in 1974. This partnership was elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2014 and further enhanced to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2021.
